Detecting Data Leaks Before Disaster

Detecting Data Leaks Before Disaster

Sep 03, 2025 Data Protection / Compliance
In January 2025, cybersecurity experts at Wiz Research found that Chinese AI specialist DeepSeek had suffered a data leak, putting more than 1 million sensitive log streams at risk. According to the Wiz Research team, they identified a publicly accessible ClickHouse database belonging to DeepSeek. This allowed "full control over database operations, including the ability to access internal data", Wiz Research stated, with more than a million lines of log streams involved, containing chat history, secret keys and more. Wiz immediately reported the issue to DeepSeek, which quickly secured the exposure. Still, the incident underscored the danger of data leakage. Intentional or unintentional? Data leakage is a broad concept, covering a range of scenarios. As IBM notes, the term in general refers to a scenario where "sensitive information is unintentionally exposed to unauthorized parties" .  It could be intentional or unintentional. On the intentional side...

The Harsh Truths of AI Adoption MITs State of AI in Business report revealed that while 40% of organizations have purchased enterprise LLM subscriptions, over 90% of employees are actively using AI tools in their daily work. Similarly, research from Harmonic Security found that 45.4% of sensitive AI interactions are coming from personal email accounts, where employees are bypassing corporate controls entirely. This has, understandably, led to plenty of concerns around a growing "Shadow AI Economy". But what does that mean and how can security and AI governance teams overcome these challenges? Contact Harmonic Security to learn more about Shadow AI discovery and enforcing your AI usage policy.  AI Usage Is Driven by Employees, Not Committees  Enterprises incorrectly view AI use as something that comes top-down, defined by their own visionary business leaders. We now know that's wrong. In most cases, employees are driving adoption from the bottom up, often without ov...

🕵️ Webinar: Discover and Control Shadow AI Agents in Your Enterprise Before Hackers Do

🕵️ Webinar: Discover and Control Shadow AI Agents in Your Enterprise Before Hackers Do

Aug 20, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Enterprise Security
Do you know how many AI agents are running inside your business right now? If the answer is "not sure," you're not alone—and that's exactly the concern. Across industries, AI agents are being set up every day. Sometimes by IT, but often by business units moving fast to get results. That means agents are running quietly in the background—without proper IDs, without owners, and without logs of what they're doing. In short: they're invisible. 👉  Register now for Shadow Agents and Silent Threats: Securing AI's New Identity Frontier  and learn how to get ahead of this growing challenge. The Hidden Risk of Shadow AI Agents Shadow agents aren't harmless helpers. Once compromised, they can move through systems, grab sensitive data, or escalate privileges at machine speed. Unlike humans, they don't pause to think—they just execute 24/7. The truth is, most security programs weren't built for this. They manage people, not autonomous software agents. And as adoption grows, these s...

From Impact to Action: Turning BIA Insights Into Resilient Recovery

Aug 20, 2025 Data Protection / Business Continuity
Modern businesses face a rapidly evolving and expanding threat landscape, but what does this mean for your business? It means a growing number of risks, along with an increase in their frequency, variety, complexity, severity, and potential business impact. The real question is, "How do you tackle these rising threats?" The answer lies in having a robust BCDR strategy. However, to build a rock-solid BCDR plan, you must first conduct a business impact analysis (BIA). Read on to learn what BIA is and how it forms the foundation of an effective BCDR strategy. What Is a BIA? A BIA is a structured approach to identifying and evaluating the operational impact of disruptions across departments. Disruptive incidents or emergencies can occur due to several factors, such as cyberattacks, natural disasters or supply chain issues. Conducting a BIA helps identify critical functions for a business's operations and survival. Businesses can use insights from BIA to develop strategies to resume th...

6 Lessons Learned: Focusing Security Where Business Value Lives

Aug 11, 2025 Exposure Management / Incident Response
The Evolution of Exposure Management Most security teams have a good sense of what's critical in their environment. What's harder to pin down is what's business-critical . These are the assets that support the processes the business can't function without. They're not always the loudest or most exposed. They're the ones tied to revenue, operations, and delivery. If one goes down, it's more than a security issue – It's a business problem. Over the past year since publishing our 4-step approach to mapping and securing business-critical assets, my team and I have had the opportunity to engage deeply with dozens of customer workshops across multiple industry verticals, including finance, manufacturing, energy, and more. These sessions have revealed valuable insights into how organizations are evolving their security posture.  This article takes an updated look at that approach, incorporating what we have learned along the way, helping organizations align exposure management strate...

AI Agents Act Like Employees With Root Access—Here's How to Regain Control

AI Agents Act Like Employees With Root Access—Here's How to Regain Control

Jul 16, 2025 Identity Management / AI Security
The AI gold rush is on. But without identity-first security, every deployment becomes an open door. Most organizations secure native AI like a web app, but it behaves more like a junior employee with root access and no manager. From Hype to High Stakes Generative AI has moved beyond the hype cycle. Enterprises are: Deploying LLM copilots to accelerate software development Automating customer service workflows with AI agents Integrating AI into financial operations and decision-making Whether building with open-source models or plugging into platforms like OpenAI or Anthropic, the goal is speed and scale. But what most teams miss is this: Every LLM access point or website is a new identity edge. And every integration adds risk unless identity and device posture are enforced. What Is the AI Build vs. Buy Dilemma? Most enterprises face a pivotal decision: Build : Create in-house agents tailored to internal systems and workflows Buy : Adopt commercial AI tools and SaaS integ...
Securing Agentic AI: How to Protect the Invisible Identity Access

Securing Agentic AI: How to Protect the Invisible Identity Access

Jul 15, 2025 Automation / Risk Management
AI agents promise to automate everything from financial reconciliations to incident response. Yet every time an AI agent spins up a workflow, it has to authenticate somewhere; often with a high-privilege API key, OAuth token, or service account that defenders can't easily see. These "invisible" non-human identities (NHIs) now outnumber human accounts in most cloud environments, and they have become one of the ripest targets for attackers. Astrix's Field CTO Jonathan Sander put it bluntly in a recent Hacker News webinar : "One dangerous habit we've had for a long time is trusting application logic to act as the guardrails. That doesn't work when your AI agent is powered by LLMs that don't stop and think when they're about to do something wrong. They just do it." Why AI Agents Redefine Identity Risk Autonomy changes everything: An AI agent can chain multiple API calls and modify data without a human in the loop. If the underlying credential is exposed or overprivileged, each addit...
The Unusual Suspect: Git Repos

The Unusual Suspect: Git Repos

Jul 14, 2025 Secrets Management / SaaS Security
While phishing and ransomware dominate headlines, another critical risk quietly persists across most enterprises: exposed Git repositories leaking sensitive data. A risk that silently creates shadow access into core systems Git is the backbone of modern software development, hosting millions of repositories and serving thousands of organizations worldwide. Yet, amid the daily hustle of shipping code, developers may inadvertently leave behind API keys, tokens, or passwords in configuration files and code files, effectively handing attackers the keys to the kingdom. This isn't just about poor hygiene; it's a systemic and growing supply chain risk. As cyber threats become more sophisticated, so do compliance requirements. Security frameworks like NIS2, SOC2, and ISO 27001 now demand proof that software delivery pipelines are hardened and third-party risk is controlled. The message is clear: securing your Git repositories is no longer optional, it's essential. Below, we look at the ris...

Between Buzz and Reality: The CTEM Conversation We All Need

Jun 24, 2025 Threat Exposure Management
I had the honor of hosting the first episode of the Xposure Podcast live from Xposure Summit 2025. And I couldn't have asked for a better kickoff panel: three cybersecurity leaders who don't just talk security, they live it. Let me introduce them. Alex Delay , CISO at IDB Bank, knows what it means to defend a highly regulated environment. Ben Mead , Director of Cybersecurity at Avidity Biosciences, brings a forward-thinking security perspective that reflects the innovation behind Avidity's targeted RNA therapeutics. Last but not least, Michael Francess , Director of Cybersecurity Advanced Threat at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, leads the charge in protecting the franchise. Each brought a unique vantage point to a common challenge: applying Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) to complex production environments. Gartner made waves in 2023 with a bold prediction: organizations that prioritize CTEM will be three times less likely to be breached by 2026. But here's the kicker -...
